White Vengeance is based on the Hongmen banquet. Feeling threatened by two rebellious leaders who successfully conquered & spread chaos across the country, the King decides to apply the old saying, "divide & rule". He plans to turn the two leaders against others at a banquet held in Hongmen.
Just like Daniel Lee's Three Kingdoms was an "alternative" project to John Woo's Red Cliff, this White Vengeance comes shortly before Lu Chuan's own version of the Banquet, The Last Supper. Daniel Lee may not be as notorious as these other directors, but he's managed (again) to get a great cast; Leon Lai, Anthony Wong, Jordan Chan & Andy On. That's surely the most exciting part of this film.
Because now looking at this teaser, you can clearly recognize Daniel Lee's flashy filmmaking, with the yellow filter, the extensive use of slow-motion during fights, the iconic/badass looks of characters... He's also trying to give an epic spirit to the story, helped by some (nice looking) visual effects. One can guess Daniel Lee's version should quite differ from Lu Chuan's film: less psychodrama & more action? Just hoping the story won't feel too chaotic or simplistic.
White Vengeance is set to be released in China on November 24th.
